Queen’s visit to Ireland going to be challenging

The Crest of Kingdom of Ireland (via Wikipedia)

The Queen is to pay a state visit to the Irish Republic this year, the first by a British monarch for a century, Buckingham Palace has announced.

Queen Elizabeth II accepted an invitation from the Republic’s President Mary McAleese.

King George V was the last reigning monarch to visit the country in 1911 when it was then part of the UK.

(from BBC News)

Actually it will be the first State Visit by a British Monarch to the Irish Republic. Since the Republic of Ireland only came into existence in 1949. Whilst I accept that the reporting of our Sovereign Lady visiting the Southern Ireland* state now known as Éire§ or Ireland is going to be a sensitive one, it is surely better to treat things more accurately – for instance…

The Queen is to pay a state visit to the Irish Republic Éire (Ireland) this year, the first ever by a British monarch for a century, Buckingham Palace has announced. Ireland became a republic in 1949

Insignia of a Knight of the Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick

Personally I am wondering whether Her Majesty will bring the Irish State Coach to use in Dublin, and which flag we will see being flown on any car that Her Majsty may use instead. Perhaps we will see someone being admitted to the Most Illustrious Order of St Patrick?

Will Her Majesty wear the riband of the Order of St Patrick at any State Dinner?

  1. Someone tried to comment presumably on this post but did so to another. So here is her comment reproduced…

I can’t believe that she is coming, how has invited her? It is not the people of the country, We are a republic, demorcratic society and I believe if we wanted a UK Head Of State to visit our country we should have a say

    1. My response was:
“Surely, being a democracy you have elected members to Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann and Máire Bean Mhic Ghiolla Iosa (Mary McAleese) as Uachtaran na hÉireann and so the people’s representatives have invited Her Majesty to visit Éire (Ireland). I’m sure it doesn’t require a plebiscite under the constitution.”

    1. If that is truly the case, why did the President invite Her Majesty, presumably with the approval of the Irish Government?

      1. Unfortunately for everyone in this shithole of a country (Ireland), the powers that be are woefully out of touch with the wishes of the people. Ireland does not want or need a visit from this facist or her more right wing husband. Do not come here Liz until you are prepared to apologise for the systematic murder and abuse of innocent Irish people for the last 800 years. It is akin to Israel inviting Hitlers family to Jerusalem for a state visit.

  3. She should be allowed to visit on condition that her itinerary is only to have PRIVATE ceremonies with Irish officials.

If there is a public parade or speech by the British Queen, it will only attract hundreds, even thousands of hardcore Loyalists and Republicans from across the border down to Dublin. And you remember what happened last time..

  4. Ever the pedant me! Máire Mhic Giolla Íosa (the Bean is not necessary) is Uachtarán na hÉireann (President of Ireland) not Uachtarán Phoblacht na hÉireann (President of the Irish Republic)

The Republic does not have a President under the constitution of 1937

    Bunreacht na hÉireann
    An tUachtarán
    Airteagal 12
    1. Beidh Uachtarán ar Éirinn (.i. Uachtarán na hÉireann), ar a dtugtar an tUachtarán sa Bhunreacht seo feasta; beidh tosach aige ar gach uile dhuine sa Stát, agus ní foláir dó na cumhachtaí agus na feidhmeanna a bheirtear don Uachtarán leis an mBunreacht seo agus le dlí a oibriú agus a chomhlíonadh.

  5. She has no right going there. England needs to [….] off and the queen is nothing but a pile of rubbish. Something really needs to be done about her visit… [edited for offensive words. -Ed.]

    1. It should be remembered that Her Majesty is also the Sovereign of Northern Ireland – not just of England. Also, I will not allow offensive words to be used in comments. So self-moderation of language would be appreciated.

  6. AND LETS REMEMBER THE WHOLE POINT OF THIS WAR IN THE FIRST PLACE! ENGLAND INVADING IRELAND, WHY WAS IT NOT LEFT AS ONE?….. WHILST NORTHERN IRELAND IS BRITISH, NOT THROUGH CHOICE, SOUTHERN IRELAND IS NOT! AND THERE WOULD BE NO ANGER WITH OUT VALID REASON, IRELAND IS A CATHOLIC COUNTRY INVADED AND THE INNOCENT KILLED UNLAWFULLY……WHY WOULD THE PEOPLE OF IRELAND WELCOME THE HANDS OF THIS POWER and demand?.

  7. Make no mistake she is going there for a good reason. I’m not sure what, but something akin to the discovery of oil in the Irish Sea.or some other dastardly capitalist venture. I’m certain of this, she is not going there for the craic.

  10. It seems that as in America, the people of Ireland are living under the illusion that they are living under a democracy. Stepping back from nationalism for a wider view; maybe its time we all realize that there is a world order in place now, and try establish the rights of a citizen of the world through the mechanisms that are in place such as the United Nations, that may itself gain credibility by recognizing Palestine as an independent state. Clearly the Queen of England is in an antagonistic role to prevent cohesion in Ireland from throwing off the debt load; that has a high probability of being able to be traced to the coffers of London Town. There is real potential for elements within the United States to align with China and Russia, to create a commodities backed digital currency, absent the infinite debt load leveraged through institutions like the IMF.
