Building Peace Together – a message from 1998 for today

Yesterday, Northern Ireland lost a brave 25 year old officer of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, when the criminals and terrorists of the past came back to haunt us. Immediately our thoughts and remembrances were of the awful bomb which came after the Belfast Agreement in 1998. Ronan Kerr would have been about 12 when the Omagh bomb exploded in August 1998.
As a Scouter, thinking back to 1998, I remember that many Scouts from Northern Ireland travelled to Chile for the 19th World Scout Jamboree in Picarquín. The theme for that event was

Building Peace Together

This year many Scouts from Northern Ireland, as well as from across the world will travel to Rinkaby in Sweden for the 22nd World Scout Jamboree. The theme this year is

Simply Scouting

Scouting is one movement that has a vision of changing the world since it was founded by Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell OM, known affectionately the world over to Scouts and Guides as B.-P.

B.-P. spoke of scouts being ‘peace scouts’ and not the ‘scouts of war’.

A scout in the army, as you know, is generally a soldier who is chosen for his cleverness and pluck to go out in front to find out where the enemy is, and report to the commander all about him. But, besides war scouts, there are also peace scouts-men who in peace time carry out work which requires the same kind of pluck and resourcefulness.
(from Scouting for Boys, Camp Fire Yarn 1, “What Scouts Are”)

Yesterday the song for this year’s Jamboree was unveiled. Perhaps we should read it and use it as a reflection of what can be when people young and old share common dreams and hopes.

Changing the world
D. Lemma, P. KlangWhen you give a minute
When you stop and think
It ain’t too hard to find
The connecting link
People want the same things
We dream of a happy end
We’re just caught in the same commotion
And time slips away

You say you want to make some changes
Why don’t you start by making friends?
You can take a stand
By shaking a hand
If it’s a change in you
Then the world is changing too

I’m changing the world today,
the world today
With a small step forward
and it’s the simplest way,
we can start today
crossing lines and borders
And the change in you, means the world is changing too.

Won’t you come, won’t you come with me
To the World Scout Jamboree

I’ve got a brother that I never met
I’ve got a sister that’s not introduced to me yet
But we want the same things
We dream of a happy end
And maybe that stranger coming your way
just waiting to be a friend

And if you want to make some changes
Why don’t you start by making friends?
You can take a stand
By shaking a hand
If it’s a change in you
Then the world is changing too

I’m changing the world today,
the world today
With a small step forward
and it’s the simplest way,
we can start today
crossing lines and borders
And the change in you, means the world is changing to.

Won’t you come, won’t you come with me
To the World Scout Jamboree
Won’t you come, won’t you come with me
To the World Scout Jamboree
Won’t you come, won’t you come with me
To the World Scout Jamboree

If it’s a change in you
Then the world is changing too

I’m changing the world today,
the world today
With a small step forward
and it’s the simplest way,
we can start today
crossing lines and borders
I’m changing the world today,
the world today
With a small step forward
and it’s the simplest way,
we can start today
crossing lines and borders
And the change in you, means the world is changing too.
